In Spring 2020, while working on an internship with UNTOLD, a student at Middle Tennessee State University presented “UNTOLD: The Campus Diaries” as a mental health awareness campaign within a campus community designed for the purpose of resonating with any student who has faced a challenge, crisis, or difficult patch through the college years. The result? Even with the challenges of COVID-19 and the national campus shut-down, students began submitting their powerful and moving stories of their mental health challenges adjusting to campus life as well as posting their celebrations, achievements and opportunities for their future. The powerful online blog also showcases the need for more mental health awareness on university campuses.
Since the Spring of 2020, UNTOLD: The Campus Diaries has grown globally, capturing the dramatic impact of a student’s voice. Like the other facets of the entire UNTOLD Project, that voice is heard through the art of both conversation and written word and allows for unspoken and silent topics to be given a safe – and anonymous – place free of judgment to talk about their experiences in hopes of helping other students. The project provides opportunities to allow students not only to be heard, but to inspire hope, educate, and create a space for compassion and change, while simultaneously raising awareness of the mental health issues within the campus community.
The Campus Diaries in 2021 extended its project to carefully showcase the student’s effective avenues of expression by creating a powerful (4) four-tower, (7) ft tall exhibit designed to create a campus awareness campaign for mental health. Found on this exhibit are actual anonymous essay pages from the web portal entitled “Dear Diary” along with the brilliant photography of Lorna Dancey. Today, we are currently partnering with campuses across the US and abroad to bring this exhibit to campuses around the world.
UNTOLD: The Campus Diaries book is a stunning full color collection of stories showcasing inspiring and gripping stories of life on the university campuses. From the heartfelt writings of students in their own words and in a “Dear Diary” format, this collection of writing is accompanied by visually stimulating photographs of Lorna Dancey. Each story captures the spirit of life’s journeys among the student population from universities around the globe. The goal of each book is to find a beacon of hope for other students to follow during the college years.
UNTOLD: The Campus Diaries partners with campuses across the US and abroad to bring to the forefront a conversation about mental health awareness on campus. UNTOLD works one on one with each university to present UNTOLD: The Campus Diaries to their student body, utilizing campus student life administration and organizations, educational groups, social services, mental health support groups and organizations as well as sororities/fraternities and student administration. In addition, we offer to showcase The Campus Diaries Exhibit at college/university centers during designated times throughout the semester.
